Open Innovation
Ecosystems

“Our situation is not comparable to anything in the past. It is impossible, therefore, to apply methods and measures which at an earlier age might have been sufficient. We must revolutionize our thinking, revolutionize our actions, and must have the courage to revolutionize relations among nations of the world. Clichés of yesterday will no longer do today, and will, no doubt, be hopelessly out of date tomorrow.”
Albert Einstein (1948) in “A Message to Intellectuals”

X MARKS THE SPOT

A changing world demands that we rethink, redesign and reform how we learn, teach and work. A paradigm shift in our thinking and mindset. A transformation in how we develop and prepare for an uncertain, ambiguous, volatile, and dynamic world.

Playgrounds, living labs, fieldlabs, techlabs, fablabs are all entities aiming for a more flexible, diverse, and adaptable way of keeping pace with exponential technological impacts changing the game while creating opportunities to be better and do better.

It all starts with a clear vision supported by trends, research, and experience. Ecosystems are the springboards to tap into creativity and innovation fueled with an entrepreneurial spirit and a child-like curiosity to discover and explore.

HOW TO BUILD

In a few steps I will show you how to build your own innovation ecosystem.  I use visualizations, models and methods to transform a vision into a mission and a clear action plan. The most important things in the whole process of building ecosystems is having a clear direction, patience and grit. Be prepared to start a love affair with change, interruptions, ambiguity and uncertainty. You will know when you are heading in the right direction once you feel realy uncomfortable, lost and feeling the pressure and resistance of invisible forces and powers. What is fun in this whole trajectory? You really live on the edge of your comfort zone and many times cross it stretching yourself for higher purpose and common cause.

CYBER PHYSICAL FACTORY (I4.0)

At the end of the year 2021, the foundation was laid for the Cyber Physical Factory at Gate2 in Rijen, the Smart Industry hub of Midpoint Brabant. A fieldlab environment where SME’s and knowledge institutions work together on industrial innovation projects. Since 2021, there has been a modular smart assembly/production line from the company Festo Didactic, which is unique for the Netherlands. It is equipped with the latest emerging technologies: Robotics, IoT, PLC’s, Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, Digital Twin, Artificial Intelligence, and 5G.

For more information please visit www.gate2.nl

FRAMEWORK

The Cyber Physical Factory is a triple helix fieldlab and experience center. Our services are divided in differerent sections and levels of activities within the context of industry 4.0. A purpose driven mindset and strategy that involves learning, creating, designing, developing, building and testing proof of concepts and prototypes fueled by exponential technologies such as AI, Robotics, IoT, Data, Vision, etc.. Insights gained from these different activities evolve into new business models and value propositions for incumbent companies but also for start-ups and scale-ups. We value a multi-stakeholder long term perspective build on solid foundation with access to state of the art infrastructure and equipment.

APPLICATIONS

The application area of the Cyber Physical Factory entails all known industries, sectors and domain. Our current focus is on the production and manufacturing industry. This involves any industry with a production facility or lab, where automation and intelligence through connectivity, IT and data play a major role in increasing efficiency and optimalizing processes and systems. From medical, pharmaceutical, automotive, machine, logistics, food, clothing and footwear industry.

MEET

Ecosystems are great places to meet like minded people. Sharing knowledge and experience building a valuable network.

EXPERIMENT

Don’t let great ideas slip away. Ideate, design, manufacture, build, test and demo your invention. Realize your Imagination.

LEARN

Learn from the experts and specialists. Explore and discover for a better understanding. Innovation for good.

OBJEXLAB

Objexlab, an initiative of Fontys School of Engineering and Automotive, focuses on the very latest developments in the field of Additive Manufacturing (3D printing), Adaptive Robotics and Open Source Internet of Things. In the lab, companies, knowledge and educational institutions work together. Objexlab has the ambition to support the business community and the High Tech Industry with its own laboratory in Eindhoven in realizing their innovations, ideas and creations. In an innovation-driven society where developments in the High-Tech industry change rapidly, Objexlab acts as an education and research partner. It creates an (international) knowledge network of and for various stakeholders.

FRAMEWORK

Objexlab is build on the applied research pillars of Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing) and Adaptive Robotics. As products and systems become more complex and integrated with greater demands for sustainability, lower cost and higher quality one has to incorporate the basics of Systems Engineering (Thinking), Advanced Materials and Lean Product Development. The collaboration with different stakeholders is a must when working on cutting edge innovation, design and development of applicatons, products, processess and systems. Innovation demands a multidisciplinary approach.

APPLICATIONS

The power of an ecosystem lies in the ability to learn through experiments and work on a MVP or proof of concept. It is truly an early stage process without (yet) clear applications, markets and customer base. The agile (iterative) style of working, heavily supported by advanced technologies and combined with Desing Thinking methods, generate short learning cycles decreasing development phase. The stakeholders can bring in different use cases to demonstrate and test their invention, working towards clear and concrete value for their customers in different domains and sectors. This is what the aim is: Co-Creation through collaboration.
